Dr. Mike Inglis
ADVISORY BOARD MEMBER

Dr. Mike Inglis is an astronomer with a life-long passion for astronomy and astrophysics. He has an Honours degree in Physics, a Master’s degree in Astronomy & Astronautics, and a Ph.D. in Astrophysics. In the U.K., Mike worked at the University of Hertfordshire and Warwick University and, in the U.S., at Princeton University and Suffolk County Community College (SCCC), where he is currently Professor of Astronomy and Astrophysics. In a seminal paper in 1993, Inglis was revealed as the discoverer of the first radio galaxy (IC5063) to have “hidden broad lines,” a key aspect of the now-familiar unified model of Active Galaxies. Mike has authored numerous books on astronomy, most recent of which is Astronomy of the Milky Way: The Observers’ Guide to the Southern Sky. He has published in peer-reviewed journals, as well as many articles in popular astronomy magazines, in the Journal of the Society for Popular Astronomy, and in Astronomy Now. He is a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society, a member of the International Astronomical Union, the Royal Institution, and the European Astronomical Association. He is very passionate about public outreach and, to support such endeavours, in 2004 he was appointed as a NASA Solar System Ambassador. He has enjoyed teaching both undergraduates and post-graduates around the world, and has undertaken research in myriad fields, such as nebula morphology, active galaxies, and cosmology. Originally from the United Kingdom, in 2011, Mike received his “Green Card” as a Permanent Resident of the U.S. with the official classification, “An Outstanding Professor of Teaching with an International Reputation.” He is currently working a new project in conjunction with other astronomers around the world, to find and catalogue the faintest objects visible to the naked eye. He has used some of the world’s largest telescopes in Australia, Tenerife, Great Britain, and La Palma, and is an avid observational astronomer. He has been a member of Hamptons Observatory’s Advisory Board since 2006.
